Skanska has won a £7.5 million contract to extend a vacant wing of Elmfield School for Deaf Children in north Bristol.
Skanska will carry out demolition work before constructing a two-storey extension
Working under the Local Education Partnership for Bristol City Council, the development is part of a wider programme to improve special educational needs and disability facilities (SEND) across the city. Work began in February and is due to finish early next year.
Elmfield is located with Upper Horfield Community School and will provide modern facilities for deaf children, as well as the opportunity to integrate their education with a mainstream primary school.
The team will carry out demolition work before constructing a two-storey extension, as well as refurbishing the existing building and creating an outdoor play space for the school.
Charlie Norris, Operations Director, explained: “This scheme will improve the current facilities and give children an excellent space to learn. Work will include specialist acoustic facilities, sensory, nature and life skills rooms, alongside other teaching spaces.
“We will also be making improvements to the existing neighbouring primary school so children with special educational needs can learn together with mainstream pupils.”
The new, flexible, future-proofed building is designed to be a comfortable ‘deaf space’ not only for children and their families, but also for the deaf and local community, providing spaces for parents and professionals to meet, learn and train.
Fire Immunity ltds involvement within this project has been to install multiple 30 minute fire rated cavity barriers within existing and new roof spaces/loft in multiple locations as specified.
A part of North Somerset Council’s £40 million investment into the Weston Villages, Parklands Educate Together Primary School, in Locking Parkland near Weston –Super- Mare, is a 420-place primary, and nursery which opened on its new site in September 2023.
The building consists of 14 modern classrooms, as well as a multi-use games area, main hall, hard and soft informal play areas, and a habitat area. The nursery is self-contained with its own entrance.
On behalf of Tier 1 contractor Willmott Dixon, Fire Immunity Ltd provided a multi trade disciplines service; including dry lining, tape and jointing, decoration, and electrical works to ensure the Passive Fire Protection on the build was fully compliant. The project was completed over a tight schedule, during the summer break to ensure readiness for the new academic year.

Alongside Tier 1 contractor Willmott Dixon, Fire Immunity Ltd upgraded the Passive Fire Protection on tenanted properties at Sandfields Care Home, Cheltenham. Sandfields is a purpose-built Care UK home, which opened in February 2014, comprising of 6 wings, 2 of which provide dementia care. The care home provides a professional and personalised care provision, offering the best in residential and nursing care in luxurious surroundings.
Fire Immunity were required to install Passive Fire Protection between the door frames and surrounding Fire Rated Substrate, installing the correct, evidence tested fire stop detail. We devised a programme of works to suit the clients’ requirements incorporating special attention to the sensitive nature of the building. Throughout the contract Fire Immunity took the lead in liaising with the client, building control and the Fire Engineer as the Passive Fire Protection specialists. It was imperative to ensure resident safety and comfort whilst carrying out the work, maintaining access routes and ensuring the general operations of Sandfields Care Home were minimally impacted.
