What is Fire Penetration Sealing?

Fire

Research shows that 44% of fire-related deaths occur outside the room where the fire started. We provide effective measures that prevent the spread of flames and smoke through openings in walls, floors and ceilings, maintaining building integrity and safety.

Fire penetration sealing systems are fire-resistant seals fit around pipes, cables and ventilation ducts passing through structural barriers. These systems, referred to as fire stopping for electrical service penetrations or fire stopping between floors, provide enhanced emergency protection.

Benefits of Penetration Fire Sealing

  • Maintains fire compartmentation & slows fire spread
  • Prevents toxic gases/smoke spread through small service gaps
  • Improves acoustic performance/insulation
  • Enhances air sealing & energy efficiency
  • Cost-effective & regulation-compliant solution, preventing costly damage

Frequently Asked Questions - Wall and Floor Penetration Sealing

Materials used for penetration sealing systems include intumescent sealants, fire barriers, and fire pillows. We also recommend the use of quality mastic seals and duct covers.

Fire barriers are crucial when creating fire-resistant barriers within walls and floors. They prevent fire and smoke from moving through a building, maintaining compartmentation. We use a variety of products to provide effective fire protection.

Duct covers are designed to seal penetrations made by ducting. This ensures that fire and smoke can’t spread through these openings. Duct insulation, combined with proper sealing methods, helps to create a fire-safe environment. It does this by providing insulation and fire protection equivalent to the surrounding walls, ceiling, and floor.

Fire pillows are versatile passive fire protection products used in penetration sealing. They expand when exposed to heat, effectively sealing around penetrations. This prevents the spread of fire and smoke. Fire pillows offer excellent fire resistance and are easy to install and remove when needed.

Approved firestop systems must meet test standards such as BS 476-20 and BS EN1366-3. These standards evaluate the performance of fire stop systems under fire exposure conditions. All our recommended fire-stop products comply with these test standards. This ensures reliable fire protection.

Under specific conditions, electrical box membrane penetrations may not require fire-stopping assemblies. Compliance with the relevant building code and regulations is crucial.

Electrical box membrane penetrations of a certain size, as well as limited aggregate opening area, are excluded. Electrical boxes with a specific annular space and proper separation are also excluded.

Compartment walls and floors play a critical role in fire protection. They create separate fire-resistant compartments within a building’s structure. They help contain the fire and prevent its spread, providing time for safe evacuation.

Service penetration seals are integral to the wider passive fire protection system. They create barriers around penetrations, maintaining the integrity of compartment walls and floors. This is done with a range of task-specific products. These include sealants, barriers, and pillows, contributing to a comprehensive passive fire protection strategy.

A fire stop seal system must be durable with the ability to stand the test of time. Its acoustic performance must also maintain sound insulation. A top priority is for it to remain airtight, preventing smoke and toxic gas leakage. It must also accommodate any structural movement requirements.
